Frequently Asked Questions

What are the ages of the Students?
10-17

Where will my child sleep?
In single rooms in the Digby Hall accommodation blocks. There will be a responsible adult in the house all the time to look after the welfare of the students. Boys and girls will sleep in separate buildings.
Will children aged 16 and above be in separate accommodation? Yes this is a requirement of the British Council so we place the over 16’s on a completely separate floor and they are not allowed access to the younger children’s accommodation area.

Where do the students come from?
The campus has had students from all over Europe, the Middle East, and Asia. Our staff team speak English and all our activities are run in English

What level of English do the students have? Classes will be available for students with beginner, intermediate and advanced level English. Students will be tested on arrival and placed according to our test.

How big are the classes?
Classes for the summer school will average between 16 and 19.

What happens outside class?
We have planned sports activities and a packed social programme. Students will also be able to make use of all the facilities on the campus in their free time. Inside we have table tennis, pool, DVDs, bar football, and video games in comfortable living rooms. There is also outdoor space were students can play football, volleyball and a number of different outdoor games

How do I know my child is going to be safe?
The British Council are responsible for regulating childcare in summer schools throughout the United Kingdom. They say about us: The level of care offered to students during their stay is well described and entirely accurate. Students are given 24 hour care and supervision by a dedicated and caring staff”.   Commenting on the safety of our programme for children the British Council say “Effective systems and procedures are in place to ensure the students’ safety and security. Staff are fully briefed on safety and security issues. All requirements concerning the supervision of students out of class time are met or exceeded.”  Above this we at ELASUK take safety for our students as a serious part of our responsibility and are continuously updating our policies and procedures in this regard.
What is the food like?

The food is varied and healthy. Every mealtime each child has a choice of meal. Additional food, snacks and drinks are available from the local Asda superstore which is open 24 hours a day. The food is traditionally English with some occasional variety in cuisine.

How will my child get to and from the airport?
ELAS UK will pick up students with their own staff from the airport as soon as we have the travel details as long as the student arrives on the set date and returns on the set date. If any student arrives or leaves outside the set dates then we will arrange the pick up and drop off with an agency which we recommend the cost will be passed onto the student.

What can my child wear?
Students wear their own clothes. There are plenty of self service laundry rooms which enable students to both wash and dry their clothes at their convenience.  A recommended list of clothing will be sent out with the joining information.

How can I speak to my child?
A lot of students bring their own mobile phones that they can use outside lesson time. We will also send a list of school contact numbers and email addresses for parents to use. It will also be possible for the students to access the internet to send and receive emails.

What happens if my child gets sick?
If your child gets sick, our first-aid staff will decide whether your child needs to seek medical advice. If the child needs medical advice ELAS has a 24 hour Arabic speaking medical advisor on call to see sick students. Upon his advice the child will be taken to a General practice, hospital or dentist.  Students will also be accompanied by the medical advisor or a member of staff on visits to the GP, dentist and hospital.
